Unique Alternatives to Traditional Pizza Crust

The ingredients used in and on a pizza have changed so much over the years. There are a number of different types of cheeses that are used, the sauces can be a traditional tomato base sauce or they can be a bit different, such as with an alfredo sauce. The toppings have also changed from the standard meats, like pepperoni and sausage to adding spinach, lobster, shrimp, and more. With all of these changes, why not try unique alternatives to the traditional crust as well.

1. Cauliflower crust

Cauliflower is one of the healthier vegetables out there, so why not use it in making a pizza crust. Some may be thinking that it just won’t taste good, but it really does! With the seasonings that are put into it as well as adding coconut flour in order to get the right texture, it is a crust that is not only better for you but tastes great too.

2. Almond flour crust

New York style pizza is one of the most popular types of pizza there is. But in order to make this pizza a little better for you, replace all-purpose or bread flour in the crust with almond flour and tapioca starch. Top it with your favorite toppings and enjoy.

3. Carrot crust

Much like a cauliflower crust, a carrot crust is a healthy option for a pizza crust. Coconut flour and seasonings are mixed with the carrots in order to make it taste more like an original pizza crust. The crust will have an orange color to it, so it will look different, but will taste great and be good for you. You will definitely get a dose of vegetables with the crust, so you can load up your pizza with meat and cheese to give you a well balanced meal.

4. Portobello crust

If you are looking to get rid of the carbs that the crust often has in it, then the best way is to just get rid of the crust. This can be done by using Portobello mushrooms. You will take the caps of the mushrooms and use them as the crust. Now you will not have the same taste as an original crust, but it is quite delicious and is a healthy alternative.

5. Bacon crust

Another creative way to make a pizza crust takes out the dough altogether and uses bacon. This may seem a little strange, but you can take strips of bacon and weave them together not leaving any spaces or gaps in the weaving. This will give you a great base to add the toppings you would like. As long as you weave the bacon together tight enough and close enough, you can even add sauce before putting on your cheese and other toppings.
